The Dirleton Scarecrow Trail started in 2020 as part of the Dirleton Good Neighbours “Reasons to be Cheerful 123!” initiative following the Covid disruption of that year. It was funded by a grant from North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership.
The aims of the competition were stated as:
“… to bring a bit of fun in challenging times and to create a Scarecrow Trail to encourage people to get out and about in a socially distanced way.“
That first year attracted twenty seven entries and visitors from all around the area. Each subsequent year has attracted a strong and increasing number of entries.
The event is now established as a yearly Dirleton event and competition over scarecrow design is fierce.
